In Canada, Radon Gas is measured in units called “Becquerels per cubic meter”.

One Becquerel is = to 1 Radioactive Decay Per Second

Health Canada recommends 200 Bq/m³ as the ‘action level’.

The World Health Organization recommends attempting to attain a level of 100 Bq/m3 or below.

Long or short term tests?

Radon testing is broken down into 2 different types of tests;  long and short term. Long term testing is longer than 90 days. Short term testing is from 4 to 90 days with closed house conditions. Typically this is a four day test with closed house conditions.

Health Canada recommends that no mitigation decision be made without a long term test. In the USA short term testing is the standard that mitigation decisions are based on.

Many of Mr. Radon’s clients choose to conduct short term tests to see if they have an extremely elevated level however we also recommend that they conduct longer term testing during the winter months if levels are moderately high 70 Bq/m3 -200 Bq/m3.

A recent publication from Public Health Ontario suggests there is an identified risk of getting lung cancer at levels down to 100 Bq/m3.

We’ve Weighed the Pros and Cons

We considered many different testing systems before we chose two that would be our mainstay.

Mr. Radon uses a Continuous Monitor and Eperm Electret Ion system for short term testing.  For mid and long term testing Mr. Radon uses Alpha Tracks.

 When someone has decided to test their home they might not be willing to wait for 90-180 days for results. If the test is part of a real estate purchase condition, long term timelines are just impractical and if it is a post mitigation test we can’t wait that long for test results.

At Mr. Radon we are proud to use the Radalink Continuous Monitor for legal or real estate transactions for short term tests.

We chose this company and system because they work as an independent third party laboratory to interpret the results and they issue an emailed PDF based report.  Mr. Radon believes that the Radalink system represents the best technology existing in the market.

We also use the Eperm Electret Ion system for short term concerned homeowner testing.
